Northern Lights Viewing Packages

You'll never forget the first time you see the aurora borealis, or northern lights. The sky lights up with other-worldly colors: green, white, red, pink, purple and blue, and they shimmer and dance across the sky. Here in Alaska we are fortunate to see the northern lights often, once the skies are dark enough in the fall, and continuing through spring. In fact, the area of interior Alaska, from Denali, north to Fairbanks and Fort Yukon, is perhaps the best place on Earth to watch the aurora. Unfortunately for most visitors to Alaska, seeing the northern lights is not something that many people get to do, because most of our guests come in the summer, and the skies here in Alaska don't get dark enough to see the aurora.  However, for the savvy traveler and the hearty souls, seeing the northern lights in Alaska can be done with just a little planning.

The best time to see the northern lights is late February through the end of March. This is prime time because the skies are generally clear, and get dark at night.  After the first of April, the length of the days prevent skies from getting dark enough to see the northern lights well.  By May 1, the skies do not get completely dark at all. The next best time to see northern lights is late August - October. This is the time most visitors see the northern lights, because the weather is mild and guests don't have to brave winter temperatures.

Alaska Vacation Store has put together  specials for fall northern lights viewing and spring northern lights viewing for people who want to see the Aurora Borealis. We've chosen special tours and lodging options that allow guests to spend the night in locations away from city lights and with great chances to see the aurora. We've also planned your days so that you get to enjoy the best of Alaskan attractions at the same time.
